Stage designer, painter, graphic artist and architect. A graduate of the Kraków University of Technology’s architecture department (1980), and of the stage design department of Kraków’s Academy of Fine Arts (1981). He has designed sets for over 150 Polish and foreign productions. He taught stage design at Kraków’s Academy of Fine Arts in 1984-2001, and conducted a stage design seminar at the directing department of Kraków’s Theatre Academy in 1985-92, and was also a consultant for stage-design students of the St. Martin College of Art in London. He was appointed head of the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts’ stage design department in 2001. He was resident stage designer of the Teatr Powszechny in Warsaw (1982-89) and the Teatr Nowy in Poznań (1988-90). He was a member of the Theatre Council of the Polish Ministry of Culture (1990-93). He has been a judge at Polish theatre festivals and competitions. Designer of many stage-design exhibitions, and author of a number of one-man shows (in cities including Nuremberg, Moscow, Paris, Kraków, Warsaw, Wrocław, Poznań, Lublin); he has also taken part in group exhibitions.
His stage designs for opera productions include Gounod’s Faust at the opera houses of Kraków and Wrocław; Verdi’s Nabucco, Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro and Penderecki’s The Devils of Loudun at the Teatr Wielki in Poznań; Puccini’s Turandot and Bizet’s Carmen at Opera Nova in Bydgoszcz; Bellini’s I Capuletti e i Montecci and Verdi’s Nabucco and Aida at the Wrocław Opera. He has worked with many Polish drama theatres in Warsaw, Poznań, Łódź, Kraków, Lublin as well as the Television Theatre. The artist’s most important stage designs abroad include Gombrowicz’s Ivona, Princess of Burgundia at the Theatre Espace Acteur (Paris) and Deutsche Nazionaltheather (Weimar); Iredyński’s Farewell Judas at the Yermolova Theatre (Moscow); Moliere’s Tartuffe at the Dramteatr (Omsk, Russia); Whiting’s The Devils of Loudun at the Clwyd Theatre - Mold (Wales); Shakespeare’s King Lear at the Haymarket Theatre (Leicester), the Young Vic Theatre (London) and The Panasonic Globe Theatre (Tokyo); Williams’ Sweet Bird of Youth at the Municipal Theatre - Haifa (Israel); Shakespeare’s Hamlet at the Mikri Porta Theatre Company (Athens); Walser’s Schneewittchen for the Zurich Summer Festival (Switzerland); Sophocles’Antigone at the ancient theatre in Epidauros (Greece).
At the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera, he designed the set design for Mikołaj Grabowski’s production of The Haunted Manor (2004).
