Ferdinand Ries was Beethoven’s student, friend, copyist, and secretary and, like the composer, was born in Bonn. He made his debut as a talented pianist in Vienna in July 1804, playing the Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37, with his own cadenza. In later years, he confirmed his talent and started an international career as a concert pianist and prolific composer. The same year, 1804, he assisted in rehearsals for the Eroica. One could say that his arrangement for piano quartet is first-hand and echoes Beethoven’s own authorial intentions. Ries’s piece will be performed by the award-winning French Trio Owon with violist Adrien Boisseau. The musicians of the trio are experienced chamber musicians who work with the prestigious Decca label. The name Owon refers to a 19th-century Korean painter whose work, according to the trio, embodies the universality of art.
