A morning concert is not really a challenge for the audience of La Folle Journée. One famous case was Beethoven’s Kreutzer Sonata for violin and piano, which had its premiere at… eight in the morning. In the morning, a well-rested mind finds it easier to concentrate and absorb more complex concepts. Isn’t it then the perfect time to fully experience the masterpiece from the last period of Beethoven’s quartet oeuvre? The Quartet Op. 132 is the second of the late quartets. Completed in July 1825, the piece had its successful premiere at the turn of the same year. Beethoven originally structured it in four movements and wrote the central fifth movement after recovering from an illness. Titled Holy Song of Thanksgiving of a Convalescent to the Deity, in the Lydian Mode, the movement is a deeply personal expression, with the Lydian mode transporting the listener into unknown spiritual realms.
