How to perform symphonic music in post-pandemic conditions? How to showcase Beethoven’s most important symphonies without full-scale orchestras? Out of four symphonies featured in this year’s program (No. 3, 5, 6, and 7), only the Seventh will be performed in its standard version. One solution is to make reductions, that is, to reduce full-scale orchestras to chamber arrangements. Reductions were popular during Beethoven’s lifetime, but now they are experiencing something of a renaissance, as it is not always possible to engage full orchestras. A chamber arrangement made by Andreas N. Tarkmann will be premiered by Sinfonia Varsovia’s woodwind ensemble. Pastoral Symphony, with its Merry Gathering of Country Folk, Shepherd’s Song, and even Thunderstorm, seems a perfect piece for such a ‘pastoral’ wind ensemble. Let’s enjoy the ‘wound up’ music while waiting for an opportunity to hear Pastoral Symphony performed by a full orchestra, hopefully soon!
