TWON Platform

The Launch:
The Haunted Manor
19 November, 7 pm

19th November is a symbolic day for the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera. On this very day in 1825 the cornerstone of the Teatr Wielki was laid. Destroyed during World War II, the building was then rebuilt and reopened on 19th November 1965. Exactly half a century later, on 19th November 2015, the theatre is launching the TWON Platform, Poland’s first service for streaming opera and ballet performances over the Internet.

The platform premieres with Stanisław Moniuszko’s The Haunted Manor, considered one of the most important Polish operas. The current production is the work of David Pountney, British visionary and internationally-acclaimed opera director, who tackles the canonical ‘Polish national opera’ from the standpoint of an independent observer, free of the stale perceptions and stereotypes that the work has attracted over the years. Instead of the early 18th century, Pountney sets his Haunted Manor in the period between World War I and II, when Poles took the first, euphoric breath of freedom after a long time under foreign occupation.

For the first time in the opera house’s history, not only the ticket holders will be treated to the special, jubilee production. The Haunted Manor will be available for watching on private television and computer screens in Poland and everywhere in the world through the free streaming service TWON Platform (vod.teatrwielki.pl). The transmission will take place on 19th November and will be hosted by Małgorzata Walewska and Wojciech Pszoniak. Starting at 7 pm, the performance will also be telecast through The Opera Platform.

Launching the TWON Platform, the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera joins a select group of international opera houses which have employed new technologies and the Internet to reach out to new audiences. To facilitate the streaming service a new recording system has been set up at the opera house, including a 4K vision control room and a 5.1 acoustic control room, a live room, and an equipment room. The TWON Platform’s team will have at their disposal ten 4K HD video cameras, which may be remotely controlled, which includes refocusing and colour grading.
