The Cyberiad
Krzysztof Meyer A production of the Poznań Opera House
Comic fantasy opera in three acts
Libretto: Krzysztof Meyer based on the series of stories by Stanisław Lem
World premiere: 11 June 1986, Wuppertal
Polish premiere: 25 May 2013
Krzysztof Meyer's opera, set to a libretto written by the composer himself based on stories by Stanisław Lem, presents adventures of constructor Trull who is charged by Queen Genius with building three machines. The first is to tell complicated stories, the second – sly tales, while the third – moving ones. The ironic/utopian reflections on life come to the conclusion that the world may be saved not by money, progress, or perfection, but wisdom and truth.
The Polish premeire of The Cyberiad took place in May 2013 at the Grand Theatre in Poznań as part of celebrations marking the composer's 70th birthday. Stage director Ran Arthur Braun transposed Lem's cyber reality into a universal, fairytale world of theatre, providing the audience with a feast of intelligent humour, if devoid of political allusions of the original.
The programme brochure provides, explains, and elaborates on interesting facts related to Meyer's music, Lem's text, and Braun's directing conception.
Justin C. Arienti received the 2014 Jan Kiepura Music Theatre Award for the stage design of The Cyberiad.
