In 1609 one of English ships sailing to America wrecked during a storm off the coast of the Bermuda Islands. The survivors managed to build a new ship and return home. The story was popular in London at the time and could have been one of inspirations for The Tempest. In The Tempest Shakespeare raises the subject of the encounter with the Other inherent in colonial expansion, territorial conquest and the discovery of America. Krzysztof Pastor invited Shirin Neshat and Shoja Azari to collaborate on his show, a couple of visual artists born in Iran, the creators of the film Women Without Men (which won them a prize at the Venice Film Festival). According to Shoja Azari, 'the political aspect of this project lies in the fact that we come from a different world, not from Western Europe – we reinterpret Shakespeare in a new perspective, placing him in our historical context'. Shirin Neshat, often called a 'visual poet', the author of calligraphy written on skin, is very interested in 'body language as a mode of storytelling'. She is passionate about choreography in terms of its aesthetics and composition. A combination of choreography, imagery, Shakespearean message and music by Purcell and Tallis, as well as Iranian music, gives us a disturbing and inspiring production.
