'What does human soul contain, what thoughts dwell there, deep inside? How much sorrow, how much pain, who can count, who can surmise?’ ask Spark and Imp in one of the first scenes in Goplana. The creatures moving in the misty air conjured by the lighting director, Felice Ross, bring us into the world of this staging ('Over the lake the mists unfold, they curl and billow, wind-caressed. What’s hidden in the waters cold one cannot glimpse, one cannot guess!'). The mists enveloping the eponymous heroine heighten the mood of the uncanny. What does the human soul contain? Goplana directed by Janusz Wiśniewski is a fairy tale in which a lot is hidden: it contains characters from Kantor’s plays, as well as from the paintings of Ferdinand Hodler, Olga Boznańska, Andrzej Wróblewski… Kirkor and his entourage come to the Widow’s hut in costumes putting one in mind of Star Wars. Also on the level of music is this opera rich in references – as Wioletta Chodowicz, singing the role of Balladyna, notes, 'in the course of rehearsals we found in Żeleński’s music inspirations from Chopin, Wagner, Moniuszko’s Haunted Manor and Halka, as well as Puccini…'. Goplana staged by Janusz Wiśniewski is the winner of the prestigious International Opera Award 2017 for the best Rediscovered Work.
