Karol Szymanowski was born on his family’s estate in Dnieper Ukraine. During his studies in Warsaw he became friends with Artur Rubinstein, Witkacy and Stefan Żeromski. In Berlin he met Richard Strauss, who greatly influenced his work. In France he was inspired by Impressionism, the forerunner of which was Claude Debussy. Later he became the Chancellor of the Warsaw Conservatory of Music. He was passionate about literature as well – he wrote essays on Stravinsky and Chopin, poems, and finally a novel entitled Efebos, which he dedicated to his lover, a dancer. The novel was burnt in September 1939, only one chapter survives. He suffered from tuberculosis, he took cures for it in Zakopane (Villa Atma, where he used to stay, hosts today a department of the National Museum in Kraków) and in Switzerland. He was inspired by the orient, antiquity, spirituality he encountered in his travels in Africa and Sicily, as well as by the Mazovian and Kuyavian folk music, and finally by Podhale’s folklore. His Król Roger is an ambassador of Poland on the world’s operatic stages. Natalia Korczakowska, a theatre and opera director, whose productions include Halka, The Lost Highway or Berlin Alexanderplatz, is a versatile artist – she’s a trained musician, a sensitive reader, a keen observer and commentator of life. Which moments, aspects, or places connected with Szymanowski will she choose for her production as part of the Terytoria cycle? We are looking forward to finding out.
