Polka
A production of the Polish Dance Theatre shown as part of the 10th Days of Dance
Polka is part of the programme of the Polish Dance Theatre for 2016–2020. In 2018, 'The Year of Gods', the company focuses on Polish divine matters, symbols, and characters.
'On the seventh day our Lord, the creator of everything, tired of his work, rested. And Our Lord fell asleep and when he slept, a melody fell through his ear into his head and did not want to leave it until our Lord gave it a name. And the Lord said: let this be Polka. And it was so.' (a fragment of the text 'Polka' by I. Gorzkowski)
Polka is a fast dance. Polka is a musical form in the even meter. Polka is a woman. Polka is a collage whose plot structure is determined by the life cycle of a woman from her birth to her death. 7 women, 7 deadly sins, 7 days of the week. What is Polka like? What does she do? What does she do not? What does she eat for breakfast? What did she not manage to do? What is she dreaming about? What is she praying for? To whom or to what? Is she passionate? What is she waiting for?
