She had a lousy childhood. Her grandfather was a priest, her grandmother a trollop, and her father a country quack who molested her every night before he sold her. She made a dash for Paris, where she worked as a seamstress. ‘She danced with students in Parisian honky-tonks and let them lead her into the dark alleys of Montmorency on Sundays,’ wrote André Maurois. Once students gave way to wealthy gentlemen, she became one of the richest and most elegant courtesans in the city. In the course of her short life (she died of consumption at the age of 23), she managed to bewitch half of Paris, including the young Alexandre Dumas, who immortalised her in his novel. Nicknamed the Lady of the Camellias, Marie Duplessis inspired the collective imagination, becoming the most famous courtesan in human history. One of her trophies, Ferenc Liszt mixed with Chopin. John Neumaier used the Polish composer’s music in his balletic version of the tragic love story. Neumaier’s Lady of the Camellias is a classic par excellence. Drawing immensely from the language of traditional ballet, in the course of the forty years since its premiere it has become a canonic piece of the international repertoire.
