Recreating the Reduta:
Paper Lover
Performative reading of Jerzy Szaniawski's play Papierowy kochanek (Paper Lover)
Directed by Marcin Hycnar
Introductory talk by Professor Barbara Osterloff
Jerzy Szaniawski was one of the Reduta's leading dramaturges. The premiere of his Papierowy kochanek (Paper Lover) dazzled Warsaw in 1920 also on account of its director, Juliusz Osterwa, and the brilliant performers: Zelwerowicz, Osterwa, and Majdrowiczówna. After the success of Papierowy kochanek the Reduta went on to stage other plays by Szaniawski: Ewa (Eve) in 1921 and Lekkoduch (Flibbertigibbet) in 1923.
The premeire of Papierowy kochanek was a show of organisational skill and unexpected power of team work. Full of innuendo and ambiguity, Szaniawski's charming comedy confronted its characters with the world of fantasy and showcased the role of poetic symbolism in daily life.
Recreating the Reduta is a series of events marking the centenary of Juliusz Osterwa's Reduta Theatre held by the Theatre Museum, Warsaw in association with the Aleksander Zelwerowicz Theatre Academy, Warsaw and the National Theatre.
29 November 2019 marks the 100th anniversary of the opening performance of the Reduta, Poland's first laboratory of the art of theatre and a great civic project spearheaded and led by Juliusz Osterwa and Mieczysław Limanowski. The Polish theatre community celebrates the jubilee with a series of events held under the umbrella project REDUCIE NA STULECIE (To Reduta on Its 100 Birthday).
