The most famous tear-jerker in the world, a story about love between the scions of the feuding Montague and Capulet families. The young lovers value feelings above the past, they pit love and forgiveness against hatred and revenge. From a psychological standpoint, they make reasonable and far-sighted choices, which audiences often miss. Alas, a combination of unfortunate events leads to a tragic finale. Sergei Prokofiev originally changed the Shakespearean ending to a happy one. Culture department comrades from Stalin’s (let us remind) times did not agree: Romeo and Juliet had to die. Prokofiev backed down, and the young lovers went on dying as before. In his Warsaw staging, Krzysztof Pastor relocates the action to Italy of the 1930s, 1950s and 1990s respectively – proving yet again the timeless nature of this tragic story. Pastor’s clean and consistent movement within Tatyana van Walsum’s graceful set design create a wonderful environment for the soloists. They love and die to touch the audiences as always, while once again forcing us to reflect upon the fragility of our feelings in a world torn by constantly recurring conflicts. A wise, incredibly moving production.
