From bel canto to verismo: transformatons of beauty
An Opera Academy concert
The concert is a cross-section of the major operatic styles of the 19th century, charting the evolution in singing and dramatic aesthetics. The programme takes the audience from bel canto, a style based on immaculate technique, balanced form, and elegant phrasing, to verismo, a genre that prioritises the intensity of emotion, naturalism, and the truth of theatrical expression. The performance delivered by the members of the Opera Academy Young Talent Development Programme combines superb vocal skills and a mature stylistic awareness, bringing out diverse means of musical interpretation characteristic of each era.
