Let us admit it in secret: opera has much in common with food. First of all, our appetite intensifies by looking at it. The more beautifully it is served, the more filling. A poster must reconcile conflicting requirements: on the one hand it should intrigue, reach visual heights, while on the other – it must inform. How have artists dealt with this extremely difficult task? The exhibition suggests an answer. Fifty-five years of Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera’s posters, exhibited in the proverbial open air. Despite nearing retirement age, poster art is far from retiring, as evidenced by latest works in the field. However, those are not the focal point. We will be recalling posters old and incredibly old. The brilliant Polish School of Poster Art notably includes its ‘golden series’ for the Warsaw Opera. Jan Lenica, Tadeusz Gronowski, Rafał Olbiński, Andrzej Pągowski are just a few names from a much wider group of eminent artists invited to collaborate with the Polish National Opera. The exhibition gives an opportunity to trace the changes that poster art has undergone – while its Polish branch, as you will see for yourselves, does not succumb to age!
