I received the invitation to exhibit at the Opera Gallery over a year ago. 2025 marks 50 years since my artistic debut. In 1975 I graduated from the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Poznań and created my first pieces: imprints of the human body on textiles, which soon were featured in print exhibitions at home and abroad. The Opera Gallery's invitation allows me to showcase my work over the following decades. My explorations pertained to such issues as the reliability of self-portrait, portrait, and print, my identity as an artist and as a woman, and the memory of my family members lost in the Shoah. The Gallery's unusual spaces are able to accommodate my large-scale pieces and offer novel display possibilities. Preparing the exhibition was an adventure. Many of the works have not been shown in Warsaw before, while some will be returning to the city after a long hiatus. I hope the audience finds my exploits as interesting as I do.
Krystyna Piotrowska is not just a painter. She is a virtuoso of graphic design and the author of portraits that transcend the canons of the genre. She developed an original technique which she replicates across different artistic media. She creates paintings on aluminium, lithographs on fabrics, video installations, and installations made of human hair, to explore the topic of memory, her Jewish identity, and femininity. Come and see the Opera Gallery's retrospective of the extraordinary artist's work. The show has been curated by Marcin Fedisz.
On Saturday, 20 September 2025 at noon the artist will give the visitors a guided tour of her exhibition. Tickets available in the main lobby Box Office (5 zloty).
