Andrea Carè

tenor

Andrea Carè is one of the most accomplished operatic tenors of the new generation of Italian artists. After studying at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Turin, he went on to win the Spoleto International Opera Competition (2005). He was among the last students who had the privilege to study with Luciano Pavarotti, and he is also a protégé of legendary soprano Raina Kabaivanska.

Since his debut, he has appeared with the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Grand Théâtre de Genève, Royal Swedish Opera, Bolshoi Theater, Gran Teatre del Liceu, Wiener Staatsoper, Teatro Regio in Turin, Teatro Real de Madrid, La Monnaie / De Munt, Finnish National Opera, Detroit Opera, Opera di Roma, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Hamburg State Opera, Teatro alla Scala, La Fenice in Venice, Teatro Comunale in Bologna, Teatro Massimo in Palermo, Beijing’s National Centre for the Performing Arts, Canadian Opera Company and Savonlinna Opera Festival.

Andrea has worked with many of the top international conductors including Ingo Metzmacher, Jakub Hrůša, Robert Trevino, Nicola Luisotti, Giampaolo Bisanti, Riccardo Chailly, Gianandrea Noseda, Daniele Callegari, Domingo Hindoyan, and Daniel Oren, while he frequently collaborates with highly regarded directors such as Christof Loy (in productions of Tosca, Fedora, Cherubini’s Medea, and Macbeth), Barrie Kosky (Carmen), Robert Carsen (Don Carlo), Adrian Noble (Don Carlo), Francesca Zambello (Carmen), Olivier Py, and David McVicar to name a few.

His operatic roles include the title roles of Don Carlo, Stiffelio, Samson and Sigurd and other prominent roles including Cavaradossi in Tosca, Rodolfo in La bohème, Radamès in Aida, Loris Ipanov in Fedora, Steva and Laca in Jenufa, Riccardo/Gustavo in Un ballo in maschera, Pollione in Norma, Giasone in Medea, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, and Ctirad in Šárka. His signature roles include Don José in Carmen, which he performed with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow and at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, and Cavaradossi in Tosca, which he has performed at the Opéra national du Rhin, Michigan Opera Theatre, and most recently at the Finnish National Opera. He recently made his Wiener Staatsoper debut as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly.

Although cut short, the 2019/20 season saw Andrea’s return to the Teatro Real Madrid for Don Carlo, along with Carmen at the Teatro Regio Torino, Un ballo in maschera at the Bolshoi, and Tosca at the Opéra de Rouen Normandie. Recent engagements have included Tosca at La Monnaie and in a new production by Christof Loy at the Finnish National Opera, and Don Carlo at the Teatro Comunale di Modena. Next, Andrea debuted at the Dresden Semperoper in Carmen and at the Royal Danish Opera. He will also sing Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly at the Greek National Opera.

Andrea features on the Royal Opera House’s DVD release of Nabucco also featuring Placido Domingo, released on Sony Classical (2015).
