Karl Burnett

Stager of MAYERLING

Born in London, he trained with Pamela Howard, and at the Royal Ballet School. After a successful dance career, he went on to become choreographic assistant to Angelin Preljocaj; Ballet Master at the Deutsche Oper Berlin; Assistant Director of Aterballetto. Since 2002 he has worked as a guest teacher and répétiteur (Royal Swedish Ballet, Ballet Gulbenkian, NDT, La Scala, Béjart Ballet Lausanne, to name but a few). He stages works for various choreographers, though primarily, Kenneth MacMillan’s masterpieces, Song of the Earth, Manon, Romeo and Juliet, Elite Syncopations and Mayerling. To date, with the Royal Ballet [London], he has been involved with the revivals of MacMillan’s Manon, Prince of the Pagodas, Mayerling, Different Drummer, Isadora and this choreographer’s last and perhaps most challenging ballet, The Judas Tree. He has also staged some of the aforementioned ballets, for such companies as the La Scala Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, Houston Ballet and the Vienna State Opera, amongst many others. In 2011, he staged his own successful production of The Sleeping Beauty at the Teatro Colón, Buenos Aires.
