Marc Happel’s career has spanned over 40 years of costume production and design in the venues of theater, opera, film and dance. Since 2006 he has brought his expertise to New York City Ballet as Director of Costumes, overseeing the design, production, and maintenance of the company’s entire repertory. Since the inception of the company’s Fall Fashion Gala in 2012, he has had a pivotal role in working with the 30 (and counting) top designers and choreographers from around the world guiding and producing their designs for the stage. Besides his own costume designs for NYC Ballet (including the reimagining of Balanchine’s Symphony in C), his work has been seen on the stages and sets of Broadway, Off-Broadway, film, as well as multiple other dance companies. In 1991 along with the members of the advocacy organization Visual AIDS’ Artist Caucus, he and his husband artist Harvey Weiss were instrumental in the collective conception, production, and iconic design of the AIDS Red Ribbon as well as other AIDS related projects.
