Thomas Lausmann was appointed Director of Music Administration at the Metropolitan Opera at the beginning of the 2019/20 season. He was previously Head of Music at the Vienna State Opera since 2013 and was an assistant conductor/coach with the company for the preceding three seasons. During his time in Vienna, Thomas was also a regular pianist with the Vienna Philharmonic playing piano, celeste, harpsichord and organ in concerts at home and on tour.
Thomas has been a Principal Coach with the Bayreuther Festspiele since 2008. There he has assisted Christian Thielemann in productions of the Ring, Tristan und Isolde, Tannhäuser, and the Flying Dutchman, as well as served as Head of Music for the Ring Cycle conducted by Marek Janowski in the 2016 and 2017 seasons. Thomas has also worked as Principal Coach at the Salzburger Festspiele, Associate Head of Music with the Komische Oper Berlin, Assistant Head of Music with the Hamburg State Opera, Head of Music and Casting Consultant at the Wolf Trap Opera, Assistant Conductor with Washington National Opera and for seven seasons as Assistant Conductor with the New York City Opera. After his undergraduate studies in piano performance at the Hochschule für Musik Stuttgart, Thomas received his Master of Music degree from the Eastman School. He continued his training at the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied with Warren Jones.
