Season 2016/17

The Teatr Wielki – Opera Narodowa is about meetings on many levels. It is where the director's or choreographer's concept meets the set designer's vision, where the conductor clashes artistically with the soloist, the artist with the critic, the concrete with the symbollic, words with music, and – most importantly – where the audience meets art. It is a forum of dialogue, of exchanging of thoughts and ideas. A synthesis of the arts. The most perfect embodiment of the correspondance des arts, because opera brings people and concepts together. The word 'opera' derives from Italian and means 'work'. And it is the most perfect work of art as it combines the word, music, theatre, painting, dance, acting, and directing. It is an epitome of Wagner's Gesamtkunstwerk and Wyspiański's total theatre. It combines profusion into a perfect whole, a spectacle of shapes, shades and sounds. It offers an experience for many senses. It does not know any national or cultural divisions.
