Well-known to cinema-goers around the world – his EO is nominated for the 2023 Academy Award for Best International Feature – Jerzy Skolimowski is also an accomplished painter whose work were exhibited at the Opera Gallery twice (in 2018 and 2021).
Now, his paintings are shown for the first time in Berlin, at the Polish Institute and Nüüd.berlin gallery. The double exhibition features 24 works and is held in conjunction with the Berlin International Film Festival.
'Jerzy’s painting is about painting emotions. About painting a moment. His art draws its dynamism and intensity from the painter’s powerful gesture that constructs epic meanings. While some see suffering in it, others see hope. It sticks in the mind of all,' wrote the show's curator, Marcin Fedisz.
The opening on 17 February attracted crowds of visitors, who were greeted by the artist himself. The show has been mounted by the Polish National Opera in collaboration with the Adam Mickiewicz Institute.
