Love and death come hand in hand in opera. Across its three acts, Tosca offers a full array of emotions. The suspense slowly builds up to reach the culmination in the aria 'E lucevan e stelle', one of the most beautiful moments in the history of opera music. Join us for a stream of the work to mark Valentine's Day. Hopefully, the broadcast will sweep you off your feet with the power of emotion and artistry.
Devoid of an overture, the opera transports the audience right into the middle of a tumultuous love story. In Barbara Wysocka's production, it unfolds during the political upheaval 1970s Italy. The chaos and social anxiety experienced by the protagonists seem extremely relatable in this day and age.
The conflict between the trio of main characters underscores the tragic choice Tosca is forced to make. Unsure which side to take, the woman decides to choose love. She commits suicide because she has loved. Despite killing the oppressor, she does not manage to save her beloved – this is the finale of love entwined in politics. A singer and a painter, love and crime – this dark classic about a woman in love who is dragged into a dangerous game with the-powers-that-be never ceases to stir up great emotions.
The production was given its debut on 12 February 2019 at the Teatr Wielki, Warsaw.
It will be available on vod.teatrwielki.plfor 24 hours from 11 a.m. CET on 14 February 2021.
