Yuka Ebihara receives a Silver Gloria Artis Medal

The Japanese star of our ballet company Yuka Ebihara has just been presented with a Silver Gloria Artis Medal for Services to Culture by Poland's minister of culture and national heritage at the request of the Union of Polish Stage Artists (ZASP).

Black-and-white photo of Yuka EbiharaHaving joined the Polish National Ballet eight years ago, Yuka Ebihara soon became one of its leading artists. She dances the main roles in the company's repertoire and is an audience favourite. She has been the female lead in all the PNB's traditional ballet productions: Nikiya and Gamzatti in La Bayadère, Kitri and the Queen of the Dryads in Don Quixote, Clara in The Nutcracker, Princess Aurora and Princesss Florina in The Sleeping Beauty, and Odetta in Swan Lake.

She has also delivered outstanding performances in the canonical 20th-century ballet repertoire: First Soloist in George Balanchine's Concerto Barocco and Mermaid in his Prodigal Son, Katherine in John Cranko's The Taming of the Shrew, Hippolyta-Titania in John Neumeier's A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Marguerite Gautier in his Lady of the Camellias. Ms Ebihara has also dazzled in the contemporary choreographes of William Forsythe, Wayne MacGregor, Liam Scarlett, Robert Bondara, and, above all, Krzysztof Pastor, dancing Juliet in the latter's Romeo and Juliet, Miranda in The Tempest, Mathilde Kschessinska in Swan Lake, Soloist in Bolero, and many others. She has a rich concert repertoire which she showcases on our stage and at international ballet galas abroad.

It is with great joy that we have learnt of the honour bestowed on our leading ballerina in recognition for her tremendous achievements on the stage of the Teatr Wielki. Her remarkable versatility, vast repertoire, incredible work ethic and professional discipline, perfect technique, acting talent, and stage appeal have become an ideal to aim at not both for the Polish National Ballet and the whole ballet community in Poland. Congratulations, Yuka! (pch)
