She rules the stage. She is the focus of attention. Deep voice, beautiful body, temperament. She is a perfect singer and an excellent actress. Her characters are never paper puppets but flesh-and-blood women. She has been Strauss’s Salome at La Scala, Verdi’s Lady Macbeth at the Metropolitan Opera, Maria in Berg’s Wozzeck at Madrid’s Teatro Real and Berlin’s Unter den Linden, and Judith in Bartok’s Bluebeard’s Castle staged by Mariusz Treliński. At La Monnaie and Theatre de Champs Elysees she was Cherubini’s Medea in the famous production by Krzysztof Warlikowski. She bowled over Milan, she bowled over New York. It is our turn again in November. How fortunate.
