Established in 1992 by Maria Fołtyn – the famous singer, legendary Halka, opera director and indefatigable promoter of Stanisław Moniuszko's oeuvre – the festival is an invaluable vehicle for preserving and promoting Moniuszko's legacy and Poland's vocal music in general. The repertoire includes works by Fryderyk Chopin, Karol Szymanowski, Ignacy Jan Paderewski, Witold Lutosławski, Krzysztof Penderecki, and Paweł Mykietyn.
Held every three years, the competition is above all a great opportunity for young artists, who can present their talent to leading figures of the music scene who make up the international jury: directors and managers of the world's leading music organisations and festivals as well as brilliant teachers and singers.
The Moniuszko Competition boasts many prize-winners who have made a name for themselves on the world's music stages. They include Aleksandra Kurzak, Wioletta Chodowicz, Urszula Kryger, Małgorzata Walewska, Marcin Bronikowski and Mariusz Kwiecień – Poland's singing elite.
