On 8 May 2016 the Teatralny Square in Warsaw will turn into a big, open-door family fastival to celebrate the European Opera Days introduced by Opera Europa ten years ago.
Throughout the day, the latest productions of the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera will be shown on a big screen set up in the square's centre. You will have a chance to see The Haunted Manor, an opera by Stanisław Moniuszko, The Tempest, a ballet choreographed by Krzysztof Pastor, and Fairy Tale, Where Are You?, a children's show.
Sunday with the Polish National Opera will also be an opportunity to listen to some live music. On a special outdoor stage, we will hear the Sword-bearer's aria from The Haunted Manor and the Fower Duet from Lakmé by Léo Delibes sang by soloists of the the Polish National Opera and the Artos Children's Choir.
In the literary salon, director of TVP Kultura, Mateusz Matyszkowicz, will talk to authors of books published by the Teatr Wielki: Professor Ewa Łętowska and Krzysztof Pawłowski, Antoni Libera and Mariusz Treliński.
Everybody interested in peeking behind the curtain of the opera house is welcome to tour the backstage. Every hour our guide will be waiting for you at the main entrance, ready to show you the secrets of the largest opera stage in Europe.
If that was not enough, TVP Kultura's Ada Karczmarczyk, host of the Kultura fizyczna show, will add to the excitement.
In the kid's zone, the little ones will unleash their creativity under the watchful eye of the animateurs. They will make upcycled masks, learn what a dodgy sock can be turned into, and go home with a fairy bird of their own making.
During our ballet lessons, little girls will have a chance to feel like real ballerinas. Grzegorz Kasdepke, author of the book Moni and Uszko, will explain to young music lovers all the ins and outs of opera savoir-vivre, while Edward Dwurnik talk about creating book illustrations.
All opera and ballet lovers will be thrilled to participate in the sale of costumes that were once worn by the divas and prima ballerinas gracing the stage of the Teatr Wielki. Bookworms in turn will be happy to browse through the books published by the opera house. If you decide to buy one, you may even get the author's autograph.
And if that's not enough, there'll be comfortable deck chairs, a baloon show, a soap bubble show, delicious food, ice-creams, and candyfloss. Come and join in the fun!
Time: 10 am to 8 pm.
