Jan Dobkowski

28 January–6 March 2016

Dobkowski

Another of contemporary classics on show at the Opera Gallery of the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera.

Opening on 28 January, the exhibition features a selection of paintings and drawings coming from five cycles created in the 2000s – Poza nieskończoność (Beyond Eternity), Księżyc i moja czereśnia (The Moon and My Cherry Tree), Himalaje (The Himalayas), Titanic, and Ciągłość energii (The Continuity of Energy) – all corresponding and dialoguing with one another, while exploring different topics.

Inspired by the famous liner, the black canvases of the Titanic cycle showcase not only the wreck – broken furniture, tiles, and remnants of the passengers' presence, such as a clock that froze when the ship sank – but, first and foremost, ultimate helplessness of technology and human inventiveness in the face of nature.

Reflection on nature is also present in Dobkowski's 'striped' Himalayas which he painted after a trip to India. These 'paintings of light' feature mountain landscapes at sunrise and sunset.

As for their form, all the common feature of the cycles is a line, a motif continuously present in Dobkowski's art as a 'trace of the thinking process': 'I want to introduce some order into the abundance of the world and emotions, that is why I use the abstract line,' said the artist.
