Antoni Libera

Antoni Libera (b. 1949) is a writer, translator, and theatre director. His bestselling novel Madame was translated into twenty-five languages and was shortlisted for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award in 2002. He also wrote the autobiographic novel Godot i jego cień (Godot and His Shadow), the collection of short stories Najlepiej się nie urodzić (Not to be Born at all is Best), and the libretto for Krzysztof Meyer’s opera Dead End. A translator and expert on Samuel Beckett, he published a large selection of the playwright’s works in Dzieła wybrane. He rendered into Polish such classics as Homer’s Odyssey, dramas by Sophocles and Racine, Shakespeare’s ‘Roman’ and ‘Greek’ plays, Schiller’s Demetrius, and Wilde’s Salome. He has translated librettos for operas by Britten, Penderecki, Strauss (published in 2024), and Roxana Panufnik. Most of his works have been published by PIW. He is the recipient of the Order of the White Eagle.
