Matthew White

Tenor

In the 2024/2025 season, American tenor Matthew White, whom the New York Timessaid has an 'attractive, healthy voice' and the Houston Chronicle exclaimed '…makes an undeniably attractive romantic lead,' will sing the title role in a new production of Verdi’s Don Carlo with the Royal Danish Opera, Prince Vassily in a new production by Simon McBurney of Mussorgsky’s Khovanshchina, conducted by Essa-Pekka Salonen at the Salzburg Easter Festival, and sing his first performances as Mario Cavaradossi in Tosca with Cincinnati Opera and the New Mexico Philharmonic. Concert highlights include performances of Aaron Zigman’s Émigré with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and Hong Kong Philharmonic, a gala with Gulfshore Opera, as well as a night of opera favorites with the Dayton Philharmonic.

In the 2023/2024 season Matthew White performed Don José in Carmen with Vancouver Opera, and a series of Christmas concerts with the Dallas Opera. He also made his New York Philharmonic debut performing in Aaron Zigman’s Émigré which he reprised and recorded under the Deutsche Grammophon label with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra.

In the 2022/2023 season, Matthew White performed Alfredo in La traviata with Houston Grand Opera, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly with Opéra de Montréal, Duca in Rigoletto with Utah Opera, anand Don José in Carmen with Oper im Steinbruch in Austria (European debut). On the concert stage, he sang the Shepherd in Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex with Houston Symphony, and Handel’s Messiah with Nashville Symphony and the US Naval Academy in Annapolis.

Engagements of recent seasons included role and house debuts including Don José with Santa Fe Opera and Arizona Opera, Rodolfo in La bohème with Detroit Opera, Spoleto Festival USA, and Opera Naples, as well as the Florida Orchestra as the tenor soloist in Handel’s Messiah. Matthew also made debuts as Roméo in Gounod’s Roméo et Juiliette with Cincinnati Opera, the Duca in Rigoletto with Edmonton Opera, Pinkerton in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly with the Princeton Festival, Lancelot in Chausson’s Le roi Arthus with Bard SummerScape, and the title role in Faust et Hélènewith the Houston Symphony.

A favorite of competitions, Mr White was awarded the Grand Prize of the Gerda Lissner International Vocal Competition, 1st place in the Deborah Voigt International Vocal Competition, the Grand Prize in the Mario Lanza Vocal Competition, and is the recipient of the Alfonso Cavaliere Award.
