On our streaming service, vod.teatrwielki.pl, you may now watch our jubilee video and listen to Polish opera legends perform during the reopening of the Teatr Wielki in November 1965. In the course of the week, we will also treat you to recollections of prominent artists and more archive materials.
Our On This Day segment celebrates the premieres of The Haunted Manor (20 November 1965), Halka (21 November 1965), and Król Roger (23 November 1965) in the newly reopened Theatre fifty-five years ago.
A virtual exhibition hosted by the Google Arts & Culture is an audiovisual tale of the reconstruction and the people behind it, complete with a host of interesting architectural details.
To get a feel of the reopening, listen to Bogusław Kaczyński’s first-hand account of the event published in the Polish National Opera’s 50/50 commemorative book. The Polish cultural icon’s recollections are read by Olgierd Łukaszewicz.
Do not miss a special episode of In An Opera Voice, Poland’s first video blog about opera and opera only presented by young singer Jasin Rammal-Rykała.
Portraits of Great Masters of Polish Opera is a series of interviews filmed on the stage of the Polish National Opera which shines the spotlight on the excellent Polish opera singers who made their debut after War War II and graced the stage of the Teatr Wielki, as well as other Polish and international stages, at the turn of the 1960s and 70s. Zdzisława Donat (coloratura soprano), Bożena Betley (soprano), Kazimierz Pustelak (tenor), and Jerzy Artyszak (baritone) talk to Dr Jolanta Pszczółkowska-Pawlik, pianist, culture manager, and chair of the Across Music Foundation.
To celebrate the jubilee, the members of our staff for whom working at the opera house is a family business have agreed to share their fascinating stories with a wider audience as part of the series At the Wielki For Generations.
