The Metropolitan Opera in New York opens its new artistic season next Monday, 26 September. A major event for music lovers around the globe, the opening has a special significance this year. The world's best opera house launches its season this autumn with a production of Richard Wagner's Tristan und Isolde by Polish artist Mariusz Treliński. The production opened at the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera in Warsaw on 12 June 2016.
Treliński was commissioned by the Met to produce Tristan und Isolde after the New York success of his Iolanta/The Bluebeard's Castle in 2015, which was the first collaboration between the Teatr Wielki and the Met. The double bill opened to a packed house that welcomed the Polish director's original vision with a standing ovation. Almost immediately after the curtain call, Peter Gelb, the Met's general manager, invited Mariusz Treliński to open the following operatic season in New York. When his Tristan und Isolde premieres at the Met on Monday, Treliński will become Poland's first stage director to open a season at the opera house in New York.
