Recreating the Reduta

April -- December 2019

Znak RedutyA project connected with the jubilee of the centenary of the Reduta Theatre, an incredibly important event not only for the theatrical milieu, but also for the entire Polish theatrical tradition. The Reduta Theatre was founded in 1919 and led by Juliusz Osterwa, a remarkable artist extremely involved in building a national identity in his reborn country. The Reduta Theatre in the first stage of its existence operated in the Redutowe Halls of Teatr Wielki, therefore in Theatre Museum’s current headquarters. The project comprises theatrical and exhibition activities, a reconstruction of the Reduta’s space, as well as lectures and panel discussions. Theatre Museum, the owner of a collection of priceless memorabilia and documents relating to the Reduta Theatre and the publisher of the most important theatre studies books on the subject (such as Żywot Osterwy [The Life of Osterwa] and Józef Szczublewski’s Pierwsza Reduta Osterwy [Osterwa’s First Reduta]) is a particularly predisposed institution for initiating and coordinating such a task. The project encompasses open meetings in the Redutowe Halls, panel discussions, recreations of performative readings of plays from the Reduta’s repertoire, film screenings of archival materials, as well as exhibitions. The project is organized in partnership with the Aleksander Zelwerowicz Theatre Academy and the ZASP association [Polish Actors’ Association].
