It was here, at the Teatr Wielki, that Stanisław Wokulski first laid his eyes on Izabela Łęcka. Now the story of this love, fascination, and disappointment returns to the opera house in cinematic form with live music.

The latest film adaptation of Bolesław Prus's Lalka (The Doll) is a poignantly universal story about love and unfulfilled dreams, about aspirations and transformation, and about a world that is coming to an end, told with a contemporary sensibility. 

It is also a superproduction and the most star-studded movie in the history of Polish filmmaking, starring Marcin Dorociński as Stanisław Wokulski, Kamila Urzędowska as Izabela Łęcka, and Marek Kondrat as Ignacy Rzecki in the leading roles. 

This kind of film production happens only once in a few decades. It is epic, full of emotion, visually stunning, exceptionally well-shot, and features a truly stellar cast.

We are transported to Warsaw in the late 19th century. Stanisław Wokulski (Marcin Dorociński) is consumed by a passionate feeling for Izabela Łęcka (Kamila Urzędowska). Having just returned to his homeland with a fortune made during the war, he resolves to enter the high society in order to win his beloved’s hand. Łęcka is dazzling, aloof, and facing the spectre of financial ruin, despite her aristocratic background. At Wokulski’s side stands his loyal friend, Ignacy Rzecki (Marek Kondrat), a romantic who watches with nostalgia as the world of higher ideals gives way to social aspiration and the ruthless pursuit of self-interest. Wokulski enters the labyrinth of aristocratic salons, where every gesture may be the beginning of an intrigue and every word a harbinger of betrayal. Rivals, unexpected alliances, and dramatic choices will put his dreams and his faith in people to the test. This is a tale of romantic passion that alters the characters’ destinies and blurs the boundaries between feeling and reason.
