Apiary at the Wielki
An apiary of three beehives was set up on the roof of the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera in the spring. The honey produced by the bees is very rich in flavour thanks to the great variety of plants blossoming in Warsaw's parks and gardens (especially the nearby Saxon Garden). Since April our bees-in-residence have made over 180 kilograms of honey. They monitor the quality of the produce themselves: bees can detect if nectar is polluted and usually do not collect it. Also, honey from urban apiaries is free from chemicals used in agriculture: pesticides and artificial fertilisers. A large city can be a good place to live for a bee. But do bees have anything in common with opera and music? Indeed, they do! Find out for yourself!
