In Solidarity with Ukraine

The concert will be broadcast by TV2 and Polish radio Programme 2 at 8 p.m. on 23 February 20123.

Over the last twelve months our Ukrainian friends experienced suffering and destruction on a scale unseen in this part of Europe since World War Two. The mercilessness, cruelty and war crimes of the Russian invaders cause widespread horror and shock. At the same time, the accounts of the bravery and successes of the Ukrainian forces and the persistence and determination of the civilian population continue to fill us with tremendous admiration. This horrendous war must end as fast as possible. The international law must defeat the rule of force. The fundamental values of the civilised world, most importantly freedom, peace and justice, must triumph over barbarity, aggression, imperial arrogance and blatant lies, over subjugation and exploitation.

Tonight’s concert is a very special event. It is our voice of protest against the Russian aggression against Ukraine, our homage to the victims of this atrocious war, and a way to express our gratitude to all who do their part daily to help Ukraine and support Ukrainians here in Poland. And that is a great number of people – private individuals, charity workers, activists, local governments, and public officials. A year ago, without a moment’s hesitation, we decided in unison to stand on the right side of history and have stood our ground ever since.
United in solidarity with Ukraine – until victory.

Let us savour this special concert conducted by Jurek Dybał and Michał Klauza and performed by the excellent soloists Izabela Matuła, Agnieszka Rehlis, Vassily Solodkyy and Rafał Siwek, the young Kharkiv musicians and the Chorus and Orchestra of the Polish National Opera. In the words of Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz: ‘Solace lies in beauty’. Slava Ukraini!
