90 Years of Teresa Żylis-Gara
Concert
The most celebrated Polish 20th-century soprano and the doyen of Polish female opera singers, Teresa Żylis-Gara turns 90 this year. As a student, she mainly sang art songs and oratorios, debuted at the Kraków Opera as Halka, and dazzled audiences with the freshness of her voice and extraordinary timbre. Her glittering international career did not take long to take off. From a a small opera house in Oberhausen, where she spread her wings, she moved to Dortmund, then Dusseldorf, and finally Paris, where she was enthusiastically welcomed as Donna Elvira in Mozart’s Don Giovanni. This was a turning point. She was invited to perform at the Salzburg Opera, Covent Garden, and finally the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where she sang for sixteen seasons! She performed alongside the best of the best: Arcangelo Corelli, José Carreras, Placido Domingo, and Luciano Pavarotti. She loved to give song recitals featuring music by Polish composers: Moniuszko, Paderewski, and, above all, Szymanowski. This concert will be a fitting tribute to the extraordinary artist and a wonderful trip down memory line.
