Tradition at its absolute best. Nabucco, just like Aida, requires historical detail that delights the eye of the audience. It cannot be different in this case, when the stage design is the work of Andrzej Kreütz- Majewski, a giant of Polish opera applauded at the greatest opera houses of the world, from Barcelona (Teatro del Liceu), through London (Covent Garden), to New York (Metropolitan Opera). In Verdi’s opera the story of the legendary Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar, who fought against the Hebrews, brings together political, social, and religious threads. All this is accompanied by music whose sublimity and passion leads to harmony. Proof can be found even in the chorus “Va, pensiero” (“Fly, thought, on wings of gold”) which is the unofficial anthem of Italy to this day. We only have the “aria with chimes”, the Italians have the “prisoners’ anthem”. Oh, the difference.
